I’ll start this blog post by saying that I’m not a fan of categorizing team behaviours or putting labels on them. That said, I’ve noticed that certain patterns of behaviour tend to appear from time to time under specific conditions within a team. These behaviours can be adopted for longer or shorter periods, depending on the responses they receive from other team members and the team leader. 

Research conducted in organizations on team member behaviour and communication has led to  various classifications of team roles. For example, Kenneth Benne and Paul Sheats identified three types of roles: task roles, supporting roles, and negative roles. Lloyd Goodall Jr. refers to task, maintenance, and dysfunctional roles
