Leading a team was never easy but nowadays it has become even harder because of the technological and economic changes that impact how companies operate. The external environment impact is high and adds challenges that team leaders didn’t have before, at least not in the context they are in now. 

Companies have faced technological changes before, restructured work and reduced the workforce before, but it seems that this time it’s at a larger scale. It’s not just a few companies going through this, it’s not just an industry sector that is impacted, it’s not just a country or a few countries that are impacted. It’s a global change.

The challenges that team leaders need to handle are not just about how to adapt to technological changes and not miss the train that ensures that they’ll survive as a company, but also about how to respond to employees’ worries and  questions, how to handle their own uncertainty and that of the employees, how to handle frustrations, discontent, complaints, and other emotions that show up and affect the work environment. People skills are required to a higher degree than ever from team leaders. 

There could also be companies that are confused about AI and don’t know if they should invest in it or just wait to see how things evolve in other companies. But the uncertainty and alert state are present in these companies too.
