Creating Cultural Unity Across Different Company Locations

How do you keep cultural unity within your company when you have multiple work locations?

In the best scenario, all work locations have a shared culture. In the worst scenario, different work locations have different cultures or subcultures. There could also be different degrees to which the core company culture is shared across its locations, dominating or being dominated by subcultures.

Why does cultural unity matter? It matters because it impacts not only the results different locations achieve but also how they are perceived by customers and outside people. Therefore, it impacts the company’s brand and identity.

And, as important, it impacts how employees experience working for that company. Two  employees with the same job position may experience the company differently if they work in different locations. And this is not only because they have different managers but also because the rules, practices, and customs may be different in those two locations.

Let's define organizational culture:

Organizational culture refers to the shared beliefs and values within a company. It provides the foundation on which decisions are made and different behaviours are adopted by its members. It influences how company’s members work and relate to each other, as well as the company’s rules, work processes, and work environment.

When Cultural Differences Appear Among Different Locations

When a group of people from a larger group develops different or new values from those of the larger group, we can talk about subcultures. But this implies the idea that the core company culture was at some point shared by its members.

However, sometimes new locations don’t even get to experience the culture that is present at the headquarters, and they form a different culture from the start.

Differences in culture may develop even if all company members work in the same location. There can be differences in culture between two teams or different departments lead by people with different work principles.

When a company has multiple work locations, the chances or risks of these locations developing cultural differences are even higher. The fact that they operate in separate locations and the level of autonomy they have play a major role in this regard.

Every group of people, when left on its own, develops its own rules and way of being, its own culture. How the core values of the company are presented and supported in each location plays a significant role in creating that shared culture and identity.
